The &#8216;postcard&#8217; with one or two airplanes or some situation at the airport. But when was the last time you actually described the photograph or a painting to somebody? Especially under the time restriction of <strong>30 seconds <\/strong>and some stress connected with taking an important exam?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The most frequent mistakes that the candidates make at ICAO English exams.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extensive thinking-over &#8216;what to say&#8217; , &#8216;how to construct the utterance&#8217;, &#8216;which construction to use to impress&#8217; before actually starting to speak. If you construct the sentence before saying it, coining it to perfection, you waste time. 10 seconds? That\u2019s 30% of time dedicated to this examination module.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interpreting the situation. Don\u2019t\u00a0do it here. If you are presented with the photograph depicting runway incursion case, say it\/ name it. That\u2019s where you start. By interpretting\/ concentrating on the reason and possible outcomes of the situation, you waste time and run risk of failing to carry out the task itself, which is: &#8216;describe what you see&#8217;. The time for the interpretation comes in the subsequent stage. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Following the description presented by you, the examiner will ask 5 questions included in their sheet and some additional  follow-up questions invented by them in course of the conversation, according to the content of what you say. The examiner and you will have 10 minutes for that!\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to do it perfectly then?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Say 5 sentences which are not very sophisticated grammatically but communicatively efficient\/ effective.\u00a0THAT&#8217;S THE CHALLENGE: JUST LIKE IN ATC COMMUNICATION. Grammar: keep it simple: \u201aThere is \u2026 \/ There are \u2026.\u2019; \u201aThe picture shows \u2026\/ The photograph depicts \u2026\u2019, etc. You can include both constructions in one utterance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"752\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/icao4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icao4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image.png 752w, https:\/\/icao4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/icao4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/image-600x302.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201aThe photograph depicts a very dangerous situation on the taxiway\/ runway. There are two commercial heavy airplanes: one is landing and the other lining up. It\u2019s a clear case of runway incursion\u2019. <\/em>10 seconds.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Structure\/ organize your utterance. There are phrases to keep your description neat and facilitate the comfort of listening: \u201ain the foreground\u2019, \u201ain the background\u2019, \u201ain the distant background\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201aIn the distant background of the picture, there are a few heavy airplanes parked on the apron in front of the terminal. The jet bridges are extended so the boarding is probably in progress\u2019.<\/em> 20 seconds altogether already.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What to do with the remaining 10 seconds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the knowledge that you have, i.e. describe the weather\u2026 You are unbeatable here: ATIS vocabulary:).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201aIt seems that the visibility is limited to \u2026Strong gusts of wind are probable. The cloud-base is low. There are many water patches on the apron. That runway is wet so the stopping distance will be longer.
