Aviation professionals communicate with colleagues, passengers, ground staff, engineers, dispatchers and other crew members every day. Some communication is standardized, especially during critical flight operations, but everyday work also requires plain English.

At the airport, employees ask about gates, boarding, baggage and crew briefings. Polite questions are especially useful. Instead of saying “Check the passenger list,” a colleague can say, “Could you check the passenger list, please?” If information is unclear, employees can say, “Could you repeat that, please?”, “Sorry, I didn’t catch that,” or “Just to confirm…”.

During a turnaround, flight crew, cabin crew, gate agents, dispatchers, ground handlers, engineers and fuel operators may need to exchange information. Crew members may ask, “How’s the load looking?” or “What’s our final headcount?” They may also discuss special-assistance passengers, tight connections, fuel uplift and technical items in the logbook.

Crew members also use everyday workplace English. They may ask, “Are you ready for the briefing?”, “Have you checked your equipment?” or “Let me know if you need any help.” Good Crew Resource Management depends on open communication. When correcting a colleague, calm language is preferable. “Could we double-check this?” is more cooperative than “You made a mistake.”

Small talk is another part of working life. Colleagues can talk about travel, food, weather, hobbies and work schedules. However, casual conversation should never interfere with operational communication during critical phases of flight.

Aviation professionals also need to express opinions and make requests. Useful phrases include “In my opinion…”, “I see your point, but…”, “Could you help me with this?” and “Would it be possible to change shifts?” When problems occur, communication should focus on both the problem and the next action: “There seems to be an issue with the boarding system. I’ll contact the technical team.”

A.
