Passengers had to <strong>cover<\/strong> their <strong>noses and mouths<\/strong> and to <strong>keep<\/strong> their <strong>heads low<\/strong>. The aircraft landed safely at Barcelona El Prat Airport, \u00a0the passengers were evacuated using the <strong>emergency slides<\/strong>, a task made even more difficult due to the <strong>windy conditions<\/strong> at the airport.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>the closest and most convenient airport<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>taxi to a remote stand\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A320neo, registered EC-NCU, was on route from Malaga to Barcelona on September 13<sup>th<\/sup> when crew reported the cabin was filling with smoke. As Barcelona was <strong>the closest and most convenient airpor<\/strong>t, the aircraft continued its journey, <strong>radioing<\/strong> ahead for an emergency landing.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft landed safely on runway 25L, where it <strong>taxied to a remote stand<\/strong> and evacuated using the slides. By then, the cabin had been filling with smoke for around 20 minutes, and the Daily Mail\u00a0 says some passengers were having panic attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft has not been used again since the incident. It is still showing as being on the ground in Barcelona, although it is scheduled on a service tomorrow to Madrid.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>statement in regard to the event<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>detect smoke<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>in accordance with safety procedures\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>relevant authorities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>determine the cause<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>the safety of the passengers and the crew is the highest priority\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vueling <strong>statement in regards to the event<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn the early hours of Saturday September 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0, flight VY2118 from Malaga landed in Barcelona following standard procedures after requesting priority to do so.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUpon landing, after <strong>detecting smoke<\/strong> in the cabin and in <strong>accordance with safety procedures<\/strong>, the crew ordered the evacuation of the aircraft via slides, whereby all customers and crew were safely evacuated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cVueling is working with the<strong> relevant authorities to determine the cause<\/strong>. At Vueling, <strong>the safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>the message to leave the luggage<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>get through to &#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>reduced mobility<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>exit the plane\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the crew did a great job of stopping the passengers to take \u00a0bags on the slides , therefore saving the slides from damage, it seems<strong> the message to leave luggage behind<\/strong> is still not<strong> getting through to<\/strong> people.<\/p>\n<p>Piles of abandoned bags strewn around the cabin is almost worse than people taking them off with them. Should someone with <strong>reduced mobility<\/strong> or perhaps a small child be in the queue behind, it\u2019s possible they could not <strong>exit the plane<\/strong>. In this case, there was no danger to life from the smoke, but these passengers did not know that.
