Clearly, they are seeking \u00a0way through various versions of financial chaos in an uncertain world of <strong>partial lockdowns, quarantines, operating restrictions <\/strong>and possible further disruptions. Survival looks to be a matter of cash, <strong>agility<\/strong> and luck<\/p>\n<p>But while the immediate future is perilous, the events of the coming months or even couple of years say little about what<strong> recovery<\/strong> will eventually look like. For the airline industry as a whole, consider three key points.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One is the price of oil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>for the foreseeable future<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>key suppliers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>low demand for &#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>faltering demand\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Always an obsession with airline bosses, fuel will be cheap <strong>for the foreseeable future.<\/strong> The oil industry is characterized by geopolitics between <strong>key suppliers<\/strong> Saudi Arabia and Russia. Unfortunately, recession means<strong> low demand for<\/strong> goods, services like air travel, and commodities such as oil. Whatever the producers choose to do, fuel will be cheap even as <strong>demand falters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Second is safety when travelling \u2013 and here, the signs are not good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>development of a coronavirus vaccine\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>remedy\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>decade\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>regardless of &#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>take measures to protect\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t hold out hope for fast\u00a0<strong>\u00a0development of a coronavirus vaccine<\/strong>; talk of having such a<strong> remedy<\/strong> within a year to 18 months is coming from politicians and business people \u2013 not from scientists, whose experience points to <b>decades<\/b>. <strong>Regardless of<\/strong> <strong>the measures taken to protect <\/strong>people in airports and on board, the Covid-19 experience is going to leave many people afraid \u00a0of travelling, except when they need to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>risk aversion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>they will be reluctant to expect\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>cautious\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risk aversion<\/strong> will be especially notable in business travel; companies will be <strong>reluctant to expect\u00a0<\/strong>employee travel. Experience suggests that another pandemic will hit sooner rather than later, and remind everybody to be <strong>cautious<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Third, pure economics <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>reluctance to travel for non-essential purposes\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>debt fueled spending<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>widespread unemployment\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>job insecurity\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It will <strong>reinforce reluctance to travel for non-essential purposes<\/strong>. The coming recession is already blowing away all \u00a0nice-but-not-necessary <strong>debt-fuelled spending<\/strong>. Before the pandemic struck, consumer and corporate debt was already at alarming \u00a0level.
