✈️ How I Used ChatGPT to Prepare for the ICAO English Exam – And Why It Works

By: [Rafał MAtuszak], GA Pilot

Let’s be honest – most pilots don’t enjoy studying English. And preparing for the ICAO Language Proficiency Exam, especially Part 2B (radiotelephony repetition), can feel like a chore.

But what if I told you there’s a simple, effective, and mobile way to practice – anytime, anywhere – using just your phone?

This is the method I discovered almost by accident. A method that let me train radiotelephony skills in realistic, ICAO-style situations using ChatGPT – the same tool you’ve probably heard of for emails or coding. Except I made it my personal ATC examiner.

📱 How it works

I opened ChatGPT on my phone and gave it a very specific prompt:

“Give me short ICAO-style radiotelephony messages. Wait for me to repeat each one. Then evaluate my pronunciation and correct any mistakes. Only continue when I confirm readiness.”

From that point on, ChatGPT acted like a virtual air traffic controller. It gave me messages to repeat, and I practiced as if I were on frequency. All I needed was my phone and some quiet time in the car, airport lounge, or even during preflight wait time.

💡 Why it’s effective

The ICAO exam – especially Part 2B – tests your ability to understand and repeat ATC messages.
ChatGPT lets you simulate this in a realistic, interactive way. Unlike static recordings or exercises, here you get instant, intelligent feedback.

It helped me improve:

  • Sentence rhythm and stress
  • Pronunciation
  • Fluency
  • Confidence under “exam-like” pressure

⚠️ But here’s the catch…

While ChatGPT is amazing for daily practice, there’s something it can’t do:

It only uses one synthetic voice, and doesn’t reproduce the real sound environment of an ICAO exam.
So before your test, I highly recommend switching to the official ICAO4U app, which uses real recorded messages, authentic ATC voice variety, and certified test-like simulations.

Think of it this way:

  • ChatGPT = daily flight circuit training
  • ICAO4U app = checkride simulator before the exam

🛫 My takeaway?

If you’re a pilot looking to improve your English, don’t wait for a perfect moment.
Open ChatGPT on your phone and start today. Then, when the exam approaches – switch to ICAO4U and do your final polish with official content.

Stay sharp. Stay current. And fly safe!
